Why people travel to Kitzbuhel
Kitzbuhel is a ski and golf town built around a medieval core of pastel houses along the Vorderstadt and Hinterstadt streets. In winter it fills with skiers heading for the Hahnenkamm, whose Streif run hosts the January downhill race, and the Kitzbüheler Horn on the opposite side of the valley. Summer brings golfers to courses such as Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee, Eichenheim and Rasmushof, plus hikers and swimmers at the Schwarzsee lake just outside town. Nearby villages like Kirchberg, Reith, Aurach and Jochberg share the same lift network. The town keeps a resort feel year-round, with boutiques, long-established hotels and a steady après-ski and dining scene around the pedestrian centre.
The drive through the Inn valley and Brixental
The route leaves Innsbruck Airport on the A12 Inntal motorway and runs east along the valley floor past Hall and Wörgl, which is the fastest, flattest part of the trip. After leaving the motorway the road climbs into the Brixental on the B170, passing Hopfgarten, Brixen im Thale and Kirchberg before reaching Kitzbuhel. This second half is a two-lane mountain road that follows the valley with gentler curves than most Tyrolean passes. Total driving time is usually around 80 to 90 minutes in clear conditions. In winter the final stretch can slow with snow, traffic around the Hahnenkamm race, and queues at hotel drop-offs, so expect the last few kilometres to take longer than the map suggests.
Practical tips for this transfer
Kitzbuhel's historic centre is largely pedestrianised, so your driver may set you down at the edge of the old town near Vorderstadt rather than at the hotel door; pack so you can walk the last stretch over cobbles. If you are heading to a chalet in Kirchberg, Reith, Aurach or up toward Pass Thurn, give the exact address, as these are separate villages off the main road. During the Hahnenkamm race week in January, road closures and crowds affect access, so build in extra time. Snow tyres are standard on transfer vehicles in winter, but confirm space for ski or golf equipment when booking. The airport is small, so arrivals clear quickly and your driver can usually meet you soon after landing.
