What Kappl is like in the Paznaun valley
Kappl sits on the B188 road through the Paznaun valley, between See and Ischgl, with Galtür further up at the head of the valley. It's the quieter, more family-oriented option compared to Ischgl's nightlife: the Kappl-Diasbahn gondola leads up to the ski area around the Alblittkopf, with runs suited to families and intermediates, plus a long valley descent. Most winter visitors are families and skiers who want to be close to Ischgl's Silvretta Arena without the party crowd. In summer the same valley draws hikers and cyclists heading for the Silvretta reservoirs and high trails. The village itself is small and spread along the valley road, with hamlets like Langesthei and Lochau nearby.
The drive from Innsbruck Airport up the Paznaun valley
The route runs west from Innsbruck Airport on the A12 Inntal motorway for most of the way, following the Inn river past Telfs, Imst and Landeck. The motorway section is fast and straightforward. Near Pians you leave the main valley and turn onto the B188 into the Paznaun valley, which narrows as it climbs past See toward Kappl. This final stretch is a single valley road with a steady gradient and some bends alongside the Trisanna river, but it's nothing extreme. Expect around 90 minutes in good conditions. In winter the upper valley can hold snow and the road may be treated or briefly slowed by clearing, so the last part sometimes takes longer than the mileage suggests.
Practical tips for arriving in Kappl
Kappl's accommodation is scattered along the valley road and up side lanes toward the Diasbahn base station, so have the exact address or hotel name ready — some chalets sit on steep access roads that matter in winter. If you're skiing in the wider Silvretta area, note that Kappl, See, Ischgl and Galtür are separate ski bases connected by a ski bus along the valley, not a single linked lift system, so pick your base deliberately. Winter arrivals should travel with snow boots rather than relying on being dropped right at the door. For late flights, remember the valley road is quiet after dark and services in the village close early. If you're continuing to Ischgl or Galtür, those are a short further drive up the same B188.
