Ischgl sits at 1,377 m in the Paznaun valley and lives almost entirely off winter sport. Its Silvretta Arena links by lift over the border to Samnaun in Switzerland, where the duty-free shops draw skiers across for the day. The season bookends with the Top of the Mountain concerts on the Idalp plateau. Three gondolas climb straight from the village centre: the Silvrettabahn, Pardatschgratbahn and Fimbabahn. Ischgl is known for late-night après-ski along the main street, so the crowd skews toward groups and younger skiers rather than families, who often prefer quieter Galtür or Kappl further up the valley. Summer brings hikers and road cyclists tackling the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse, but the resort is at its busiest from December to April.

The route leaves Innsbruck Airport and joins the A12 Inntal motorway heading west, running flat and fast along the Inn river past Telfs, Imst and Landeck for most of the distance. Near Pians the road turns off the motorway and onto the B188 Paznauntalstrasse, which follows the Trisanna river up the valley. From here the character changes: it becomes a two-lane mountain road climbing steadily through See and Kappl, with the valley narrowing and the villages strung along it. The final stretch into Ischgl is winding but well maintained and kept clear in winter. Expect roughly 90 minutes in normal conditions. The motorway portion is straightforward; the valley section is where you gain altitude and start seeing the peaks of the Silvretta and Verwall ranges close in on either side.

Ischgl's centre is largely pedestrianised and many hotels sit on streets closed to through traffic, so confirm your exact hotel name and street when booking; a driver will drop you at the nearest permitted point, which may be a short walk with your luggage. If you plan to cross to Samnaun for duty-free shopping, remember it involves leaving Austria, so keep your passport or ID handy even though the lift crosses the border. In peak winter, Saturday is changeover day across the Paznaun and the B188 can slow near See and Kappl in the afternoon, so an earlier arrival slot helps. Ski and boot bags are heavy and bulky — flag the number of pieces in advance so the right vehicle is sent. Snow chains and winter tyres are standard on this route.
