What Davos is and who comes here
Davos sits at around 1,560 metres in the Graubünden canton of Switzerland, split between Davos Platz and Davos Dorf along the valley floor. Skiers come in winter for the Parsenn slopes above Davos Dorf and the Jakobshorn facing Platz, while the Schatzalp funicular and the Davosersee lake draw walkers and families in summer. The town is known worldwide for the World Economic Forum each January, held at the Congress Centre, and for the Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament at Christmas. The Kirchner Museum holds major Expressionist works. Neighbouring Klosters shares the same ski region. Unlike many Alpine resorts, Davos reads more as a long working town than a compact old centre, with hotels and shops strung out along Promenade and Talstrasse.
The drive across the border into the Engadine
From Innsbruck Airport the route heads west on the A12 past Imst and Landeck, then leaves the motorway for the valley road toward Pfunds and the Swiss border crossing at Martina. From there you follow the Inn through the Lower Engadine past Scuol and Susch. The final stretch is the decisive one: in the warmer months the car climbs the Flüela Pass, a high switchback road topping out above 2,380 metres before dropping down to Davos Dorf. The whole journey runs roughly two and a half hours. Expect motorway early on, then a slower two-lane road, and a winding climb at the end that some passengers find noticeable. Have passports or ID ready — this is a genuine international border, and Switzerland is outside the EU customs area.
Winter closures and practical pointers for this route
The key thing to know: the Flüela Pass closes in winter and after heavy snow, so from roughly November to May the transfer reaches Davos via the Vereina car-carrying train, which loads vehicles at Sagliains near Susch and emerges at Selfranga by Klosters, then drives the short road in. This adds loading time, so winter journeys run longer and benefit from booking around the train timetable. A Swiss motorway vignette is required for the section used on the Swiss side; a reputable transfer operator will already have this. Tell your driver whether you want Davos Platz or Davos Dorf, as they are several kilometres apart. Snow chains or winter tyres are standard in season. During WEF week in January, access to central Davos is heavily restricted by security checkpoints, so allow extra time and share your accreditation details in advance.
