Where you're actually going on Alpe di Siusi
Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm in German) is a high meadow plateau in South Tyrol, Italy, below the Sciliar/Schlern massif and the Sassolungo peaks. Most travellers actually stay in the villages at its foot: Siusi allo Sciliar (Seis am Schlern) and Castelrotto (Kastelruth), or up on the plateau around Compatsch, the main hub at roughly 1,800 metres. In winter it's a Dolomiti Superski ski area with gentle, wide pistes popular with families and beginners. In summer it fills with hikers and cyclists crossing the open pasture toward the Schlern. Nearby Ortisei in Val Gardena is a short drive on. Note the plateau is closed to private cars during the day, so your drop-off point matters.
The drive over the Brenner into South Tyrol
The route runs south from Innsbruck on the A13 Brenner motorway, climbing over the Brenner Pass and crossing into Italy, where it becomes the A22. You'll follow the Isarco/Eisack valley down past Vipiteno/Sterzing and Bressanone/Brixen. For the villages at the foot of the meadow, you leave the motorway near Bolzano Nord or Chiusa/Klausen and climb a winding mountain road up to Siusi and Castelrotto. The journey is roughly 150 km and about two hours in normal conditions. Most of it is fast motorway; the final 20–30 minutes is the slow, switchback climb you'd expect in the Dolomites. The Brenner is a busy freight corridor, so weekday traffic and the toll stations can add time.
Planning your drop-off and the plateau car ban
The key practical point: the road up to the plateau (Compatsch and beyond) is closed to private vehicles roughly between 9:00 and 17:00. If your accommodation is up on the meadow, the usual approach is a drop-off in Siusi allo Sciliar and the Seiser Alm Bahn cable car up, or your hotel's own permitted shuttle. Confirm with your hotel before travel so your driver knows whether to aim for Siusi, Castelrotto, or the cable car base station. In winter, carry boots and warm layers in your cabin bag, as the upper village is snow-bound and much colder than the valley. Border-crossing documents are worth having ready, and tell us your flight number so we can track delays over the Brenner.
