What San Antonio Abad is known for
Sant Antoni de Portmany sits on Ibiza's west coast around a wide bay. It draws a young crowd for the West End bars and the clubs, but families and couples also come for the calmer beaches at Cala Gració, Cala Bassa and Cala Conta a short ride further out. The palm-lined Passeig de ses Fonts and the marina fill up in the evening, and the Sunset Strip near Café del Mar and Café Mambo is where people gather to watch the sun drop behind Conejera island. Summer, from May to October, is the busy stretch. Out of season it's a quieter working town with the parish church of Sant Antoni and the small egg monument (s'Ou) at its centre.
The drive from the airport across the island
San Antonio is on the opposite side of the island from the airport, which sits in the south near Sant Jordi. The usual route runs up the E-10/C-733 towards Ibiza Town's ring road, then cuts west along the C-731 through the interior, passing Sant Rafel with its pottery workshops and roadside clubs. It's mostly dual carriageway and gentle inland terrain rather than mountain road, so the ride is smooth and takes roughly 25 minutes with normal traffic. The last stretch drops you down into the bay and the town's grid of streets. In peak summer the C-731 and the entries into San Antonio can back up, especially on weekend changeover days and in the late afternoon.
Practical tips for arriving in San Antonio
Give your driver the specific area, not just "San Antonio": the West End, the bay-front hotels, or the quieter Caló des Moro and s'Arenal end all mean different drop-off points, and some streets around the West End are pedestrianised or closed at night. If you're staying near Café del Mar, ask to be dropped on the seafront and walk in. Many bay-front hotels have entrances set back from the promenade, so confirm the loading spot in advance. For late flights, note that the ferry to Formentera and the day-boats to Cala Bassa (the Santa Eulària express boats) leave from the town's port, not the airport. Bring water for summer arrivals; the walk from any central drop-off is exposed and hot.
