The route runs almost entirely on motorway. From Hamburg Airport you cross the city's northern edge to join the A7, the main north–south artery through Schleswig-Holstein, and follow it past Neumünster. Near Bordesholm you branch onto the A215, which runs the last stretch straight into Kiel. The terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland and forest — no hills or coastline until you near the fjord. Total distance is around 95 km and the drive usually takes about 80 to 90 minutes in normal traffic. The A7 is a known bottleneck around Hamburg, especially near the Elbe tunnel and the Hamburg-Nord interchange, so the first ten kilometres can be the slowest part. Once clear of the city the run is steady and straightforward.

If you are catching a ferry, tell the driver which terminal: the Norwegenkai (Color Line) and Schwedenkai (Stena Line) are both near the city centre on opposite banks, while the Ostuferhafen handles other services. Check-in for the Oslo and Gothenburg sailings closes well before departure, so allow buffer for the A7 delays around Hamburg — leaving early is worth it. During Kiel Week in late June the waterfront, Kiellinie promenade and roads near Schilksee are heavily congested and parking is scarce, so a door-to-door drop is far easier than driving yourself. For Laboe and the beaches on the eastern shore, the route loops around or across the fjord rather than through the centre. Ask to be set down at your specific hotel entrance rather than the main station, as the old-town streets are narrow.
