Why Täsch is where road transfers end for Zermatt
Zermatt is car-free, so no private vehicle can drive into the resort. Täsch, the last village in the Mattertal at around 1,450 m, is where the road stops. Here the Matterhorn Terminal has a large covered car park and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn shuttle, which runs to Zermatt station in about 12 minutes every 20 minutes. Skiers arrive in winter for the slopes linking to Cervinia, while summer brings hikers heading for the Gornergrat railway, the Five Lakes Walk and views of the Matterhorn itself. Täsch itself is small and functional; most travellers transfer straight onto the train. Keep your luggage manageable, as you will move it from car to platform to Zermatt's electric taxis or hotel carts.
The drive through the Rhône valley to the Mattertal
The route leaves Grenoble-Alpes-Isère on fast roads toward Geneva, then follows Swiss motorways along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley past Martigny, Sion and Visp. This stretch is mostly flat, straight motorway and covers most of the distance. At Visp the character changes: you turn south into the Mattertal, a steep, narrowing valley road that climbs through Stalden, St. Niklaus and Randa before reaching Täsch. The final section is winding, with tunnels, rock galleries and single-sided passing points in a couple of villages. Expect the last 30-odd kilometres to take noticeably longer than the motorway miles. Total driving time is around five hours depending on border traffic at Geneva and conditions in the valley.
Practical tips for the Täsch handover and onward to Zermatt
You will need a Swiss motorway vignette for this route; a reputable transfer operator will already have one, but confirm it. Carry passports or ID, as you cross from France into Switzerland near Geneva. At the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch, buy your shuttle ticket from the machines or desk before boarding; the train is the only way up. In winter, allow extra time, as the valley road can be slow after snowfall and occasionally closes between Randa and Täsch. Tell your driver your Zermatt hotel name in advance so they drop you at the terminal with time to catch the shuttle. On arrival in Zermatt, electric taxis and many hotels' luggage carts meet the train, which saves hauling bags through the pedestrian streets.
