What Lech am Arlberg is known for
Lech sits at around 1,450 metres in Vorarlberg, Austria, and forms part of the Ski Arlberg area linked with Zürs, St. Anton and St. Christoph. Winter is the main season: skiers come for the White Ring circuit, the Rüfikopf cable car and the quieter slopes above Oberlech, reached by its own cable car from the village. The place has a reputation for understated luxury, with family-run hotels around the St. Nikolaus parish church and the Lech river running through the centre. In summer, walkers follow the Lechweg long-distance trail, which starts near the Formarinsee, and the Green Ring hiking route. Neighbouring Zürs, a few minutes up the Flexen road, is even smaller and almost entirely ski-focused.
The drive across the Alps to Lech
This is a long international transfer, roughly 560 kilometres and well over six hours in good conditions. From the airport near Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs the route runs toward Geneva, then across Switzerland on the motorway network past Bern or via Lausanne and Zürich toward the Austrian border at Feldkirch. The last stretch climbs through Vorarlberg: up the valley past Bludenz and Langen am Arlberg, then onto the Flexen road (Flexenstrasse) with its avalanche galleries and tunnels before the final descent into Lech. The early part is fast motorway; the closing section is a genuine mountain pass with tight bends. In winter the Flexen approach can see snow and temporary closures, so journey times vary more than the distance suggests.
Planning this route in practice
Because the drive crosses France, Switzerland and Austria, allow for the Swiss motorway vignette and potential border traffic; a reputable transfer firm handles the vignettes and tolls for you. Given the length, this route suits travellers who prefer a single door-to-door car over connecting flights into Zürich or Innsbruck, which are the usual gateways. Confirm your exact hotel in advance: Lech's village core has narrow one-way streets, and some properties in Oberlech are not reachable by road in deep winter, with luggage transported by the hotel's own snowcat or cable car. In peak ski weeks (Christmas, New Year, February), schedule generous buffer time for the Flexen road. A daytime departure is wise so the mountain section is driven in daylight.
