Villard-Reculas is a small village at around 1,500m on a south-facing shelf above the Oisans valley, linked by lift and piste into the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine and its roughly 250km of runs. It has a few hundred beds, chalet-style lodging, a handful of restaurants and one main lift out of the village, so it draws skiers who want direct access to the big domain without the traffic and nightlife of Alpe d'Huez itself. In summer it's used by hikers and cyclists tackling the Oisans passes. The old church and terraced slopes give it a farming-hamlet feel rather than a purpose-built resort, and families and returning regulars make up much of the winter crowd.

From Grenoble-Alpes-Isère Airport at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs the route runs on the A48 and Grenoble ring road, then heads southeast on the N85 toward Vizille and joins the N91 up the Romanche valley. This stretch is a steady climb through Rochetaillée and past the Lac du Chambon area toward Bourg-d'Oisans, with tunnels and rock galleries along the gorge. At Bourg-d'Oisans the road turns onto the D211 climb toward Alpe d'Huez, then branches off on the narrow D211b to Villard-Reculas. Expect roughly 130km and about two to two and a half hours depending on conditions. The final section is a genuine mountain road with tight bends and a single lane through the village, quite different from the motorway start.

The D211b into Villard-Reculas is narrow and can be snow-covered in midwinter, so travel with a driver who carries chains and knows the Oisans climbs. Give the exact chalet name and the nearest lift or the village square, since addresses in the hamlet are hard to locate and the single street limits where a vehicle can stop or turn. Saturday changeover days on the Alpe d'Huez access road bring heavy traffic through Bourg-d'Oisans, so allow extra time for early flights. There are shops and a supermarket in Bourg-d'Oisans at the foot of the climb, the last convenient place to stock up before the final ascent. In summer, the same road is busy with cyclists, so the last kilometres run slower than the distance suggests.
