What Crans-Montana is known for
Crans-Montana sits on a south-facing plateau around 1,500 m above the town of Sierre in the Valais, formed from the two linked villages of Crans-sur-Sierre and Montana, with Aminona at the eastern end. In winter it draws skiers to slopes running up toward the Plaine Morte glacier; in summer the draw is the Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre, which hosts the European Masters, plus walking routes past the small lakes Grenon, Moubra and Étang Long. The resort attracts families, golfers and a well-heeled residential crowd, and keeps a long, almost car-oriented main strip rather than a compact old town. Most hotels and chalets cluster along Rue du Prado and the roads above the lakes, so pin your exact address before arrival.
The drive through the Rhône valley
The route runs east from Grenoble-Alpes-Isère Airport toward Geneva, then follows the A9 motorway down the length of the Rhône valley past Montreux, Martigny and Sion. This stretch is fast, flat and mostly motorway, with the Rhône and vineyard terraces on either side. The journey crosses into Switzerland, so passports or ID are needed and a motorway vignette applies. The final part changes character completely: at Sierre the road leaves the valley floor and climbs a tight series of switchbacks for roughly fifteen kilometres up to the plateau, gaining well over a thousand metres. Expect the last twenty to thirty minutes to be slow and winding, especially in snow. Total road time is usually a little under four hours in clear conditions.
Practical advice for this transfer
Because this is a cross-border trip, carry valid ID for every passenger and keep it reachable rather than packed in the hold. In winter, give the driver your chalet or hotel address and the nearest landmark, since the climb from Sierre and the spread-out resort roads can be hard to navigate after dark or in heavy snow. Allow generous buffer time on Saturday ski-changeover days and during the Easter and Christmas weeks, when the final switchbacks slow down. For summer golf and hiking trips the road is quicker and clearer. The Sierre–Crans-Montana funicular is an alternative for lighter luggage, but a door-to-door car makes more sense with skis, boot bags or young children heading straight up to the plateau.
