What makes Avoriaz 1800 different
Avoriaz 1800 is a purpose-built, car-free resort perched above Morzine in the Portes du Soleil, the vast cross-border ski area linking France and Switzerland. Its timber-clad buildings sit directly on the slopes, so the resort is organised by sectors rather than streets: Falaise, Festival, Hauts-Forts and the Snowpark. Once you arrive, movement is on foot, skis, or horse-drawn sleigh and electric snowcat taxis. It draws families and intermediate skiers in winter for the ski-in ski-out layout and the link to Les Lindarets, Châtel and Champéry. In summer, mountain bikers and hikers use the same lift network. The nearest conventional village below is Morzine, where most road traffic actually ends.
The drive from Grenoble airport to Avoriaz
The route runs almost entirely on motorway before a short mountain finish. From the airport at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs you join the A48 toward Chambéry, then the A41 and A40 north past Annecy and Cluses into the Haute-Savoie. At Cluses you leave the motorway and climb the D902 valley road through Les Gets or via Taninges toward Morzine. The final stretch above Morzine is a steady series of switchbacks up to the Avoriaz car parks at the resort entrance. Expect roughly three hours in good conditions. Because Avoriaz is car-free, the drive ends at the parking terraces below the village, not inside it; the last twenty minutes are the slowest part in winter.
Practical tips for arriving in Avoriaz
Since vehicles cannot enter Avoriaz, confirm with your accommodation how you reach your building from the parking terraces: most lodges arrange a sleigh or snowcat shuttle, and you should know which sector (Falaise, Festival, Amara, etc.) you are staying in before arrival. Travel light or in soft bags, as luggage is loaded onto sleighs. In peak winter weeks the Cluses-to-Morzine road and the final climb slow considerably on Saturdays, the main changeover day, so an earlier flight helps. Winter tyres or chains are essential above Cluses. In summer the resort is far quieter and the road is straightforward. Keep warm layers accessible in your hand luggage, as the open-air transfer from the car park to your door can be cold.
