What Alpe du Grand Serre offers above La Morte
Alpe du Grand Serre sits above the village of La Morte on the Matheysine plateau, south of Grenoble. It's a compact, unpretentious resort that draws families and Grenoble weekenders rather than international crowds, with pistes running from around 1,350m up towards the Grand Serre at roughly 2,180m. Winter is the main season, but in summer the same slopes open for hiking and mountain biking, with the Lac de Laffrey and Lac de Petichet nearby for swimming. The village keeps a handful of ski-in lodgings, a small ski school and family-priced lift passes. Nearby La Mure, with its restored mountain railway through the Drac gorges, is the practical service town for shops and supplies when the resort itself winds down midweek.
The drive across the Matheysine plateau
From Grenoble-Alpes-Isère Airport near Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, the route runs on the A48 and A480 ring towards Grenoble, then south on the A51 and the RN85 — the old Route Napoléon — climbing out of the Drac valley past the Laffrey lakes. This stretch includes the long Laffrey descent, a notoriously steep grade that heavy traffic must respect. Above La Mure you branch east on the RD114 towards La Morte, where the final kilometres narrow and wind up to the resort. Expect roughly an hour and three-quarters in good conditions. The first half is fast dual carriageway; the plateau section is open and exposed, and the last climb is a genuine mountain road that slows noticeably when there's snow.
Planning your transfer to Alpe du Grand Serre
Because Alpe du Grand Serre is small and seasonal, local services thin out midweek, so a pre-booked door-to-door car saves you from unreliable connections through La Mure. In winter, give your driver the name of your chalet or residence rather than just the resort — parking sits across a couple of levels and the upper lots fill on weekends. Ask the driver to carry winter equipment and allow extra time for the Laffrey grade and the RD114 climb when snow chains may be needed. Stock up in La Mure or Vizille on the way up, as the resort's shops keep limited hours. For summer hiking or the lakes, confirm whether you want a drop at the village or lower at Laffrey for the lakeside paths.
