What Maspalomas covers, from the dunes to Meloneras
Maspalomas sits at the southern tip of Gran Canaria and is really several linked areas. The protected dune field runs behind Playa del Inglés down to the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse and the Charca lagoon. West of the lighthouse, Meloneras has newer hotels, the Boulevard El Faro promenade and the Campo de Golf de Maspalomas. Families come year-round for the wide sand and reliable winter sun, while the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés is the hub of the island's gay nightlife. Golfers, cyclists and walkers use the milder months from October to April. Nearby you'll find Palmitos Park inland and the quieter beaches of San Agustín just up the coast.
The GC-1 drive south from the airport
The route is almost entirely motorway. Leaving the airport you join the GC-1 heading south, keeping the coast on your left the whole way. The road is fast, dual-carriageway and generally free of sharp bends, passing Vecindario and the exits for San Agustín and Playa del Inglés before reaching Maspalomas. The terrain is dry and open, with the sea on one side and low volcanic slopes inland. Expect roughly half an hour in normal traffic. The final stretch depends on which part of Maspalomas you need: exits split off for Playa del Inglés, the dunes, the lighthouse area and Meloneras, so the last few minutes involve leaving the motorway and threading through the resort's internal roads.
Getting to the right part of Maspalomas
Because Maspalomas is spread across several districts, tell your driver the exact hotel or apartment complex and, ideally, the nearest landmark — the Faro, the Yumbo Centrum, or a specific Meloneras hotel. Many large apartment complexes such as those around the dunes have multiple gates and long internal roads, and reception is not always at the road you'd expect. Traffic in Playa del Inglés builds around the Yumbo in the evenings. If you're staying near the dunes, note that you cannot drive to the beach itself — it's a protected reserve reached on foot. For late arrivals, the GC-1 is well lit and the transfer time changes little at night, so a direct pickup avoids waiting for shuttles that stop at multiple hotels.
