What Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is known for
Las Palmas is the island's capital and its main city, split between distinct areas. Playa de Las Canteras is a long, sheltered urban beach with a reef (La Barra) that calms the water, popular year-round with swimmers, families and surfers heading to El Confital at the northern end. The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus anchors the beach's southern tip. Inland sits Vegueta, the old quarter, with the Cathedral of Santa Ana, Casa de Colón and the Vegueta market. Triana is the shopping street next door. Around Parque Santa Catalina and the Muelle Deportivo marina you'll find the cruise port, ferries to Tenerife and the science museum. Residents, cruise passengers and long-stay winter visitors all pass through.
The drive north on the GC-1
The airport (Gando) sits on the east coast, and the route to Las Palmas runs north the whole way on the GC-1 motorway. It's dual carriageway from start to finish, following the coastline with the sea on your right and dry, low hills inland. There are no mountain sections and no winding roads. Traffic is the main variable: the stretch approaching Las Palmas builds up at morning and evening rush hours, when commuters flood in and out of the city. Once you reach the city, the exit you take depends on your neighbourhood — Vegueta and the port are further north than the first city exits. Narrow one-way streets in Vegueta and Triana mean the final few minutes can be slow.
Practical tips for this airport transfer
Tell your driver the specific area you're staying in: Las Canteras, Vegueta, Triana, or near the marina and Parque Santa Catalina. These are several kilometres apart within the city and use different GC-1 exits. If you're catching a ferry to Tenerife or Fuerteventura from the Muelle de Santa Catalina, allow extra time during rush hour, as the port access shares roads with commuter traffic. Las Canteras hotels often sit on the pedestrian promenade (Paseo de Las Canteras), so vehicles drop you a short walk away rather than at the door. If you arrive on a cruise-heavy day, the port area gets busy. For late arrivals, the GC-1 is quiet and the trip is quicker than the daytime estimate.
