St Andrews is where most golfers want to be. The Old Course, run by the Royal and Ancient, sits beside West Sands beach, with the Swilcan Bridge and the British Golf Museum a short walk from the first tee. The town also holds the Jubilee, New, Eden and Castle courses, plus Kingsbarns just down the coast. Beyond golf, the ruined St Andrews Cathedral and Castle overlook the harbour, and the University of St Andrews fills the medieval streets of North, South and Market Street with students in term time. Summer brings families to the East Sands and day-trippers heading to the East Neuk fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem. Open Championship years draw the largest crowds by far.

The route leaves Glasgow Airport on the M8 heading east, then swings north to cross the Firth of Forth on the Queensferry Crossing, the tall cable-stayed bridge you'll see clearly on the approach. From there the M90 runs north through Fife past Kinross, then the A91 carries you east through farmland and the market town of Cupar. The final stretch into St Andrews is a single-carriageway approach past the golf courses on the edge of town. Expect roughly an hour and forty minutes for around 130 kilometres, most of it motorway and fast A-road. The terrain is gentle inland farmland rather than mountains, with the coast only appearing as you reach the town itself.

St Andrews has no railway station, so the nearest trains stop at Leuchars, about ten minutes north — a private transfer straight to your hotel or clubhouse avoids that extra leg with clubs and luggage. If you're playing the Old Course, confirm your tee time and ask the driver to drop you near the R&A clubhouse or Golf Place, as vehicle access along the Links is restricted. The old-town streets around the Cathedral and university are narrow and often busy with students, so drop-offs at central hotels can be tight. During Open Championship weeks road closures and diversions are extensive, so allow extra time. Kingsbarns and the East Neuk villages are worth arranging as onward stops while you have the car.
