This stretch is narrow, twisting and tree-lined, with the loch close on your right and oncoming traffic tight; it is slow going and often busy with camper vans in summer. Past Crianlarich and Tyndrum the terrain opens onto Rannoch Moor, a wide, treeless expanse, before the road climbs to Glen Coe with steep peaks on both sides. After Glencoe village you follow Loch Leven and Loch Linnhe into Fort William. Expect around two and a half hours. The scenery is constant but the loch-side bends mean it rarely feels fast.

There is no motorway past Loch Lomond and no realistic detour, so allow extra time in July and August when the single carriageway backs up behind slow traffic. Weather changes fast on Rannoch Moor and at Glen Coe; snow can close or delay the A82 in winter, so build in a buffer for early flights out of Glasgow. There are few reliable stops after Tyndrum, so use the services there for food, fuel or toilets before the long open stretch.
