This part of the Ligurian motorway is a long chain of tunnels and viaducts through the hills behind the coast, so you see less sea than you might expect but move quickly. The driver exits at Rapallo, then follows the shoreline road south through Rapallo and around the bay into Santa Margherita. The final stretch narrows as it enters the town: one-way streets near the harbour and limited stopping along the seafront. Total time is usually around fifty minutes, longer on summer weekends when the Rapallo exit and the coast road back up with beach traffic and delivery vehicles.

Tell your driver in advance if your accommodation is inside the old town or up the hillside toward Nozarego or San Lorenzo della Costa, because vehicles cannot reach every doorstep and you may have a short walk with luggage over cobbles or steps. If you are continuing to Portofino, note that private cars face restrictions and paid parking is very limited there, so many travellers are dropped in Santa Margherita and take the ferry or the local bus onward. Ferries and the Portofino boats run more frequently between April and October. For the Cinque Terre, it is often faster to take the train from nearby Santa Margherita–Portofino station than to drive. Book pickups early in summer, when the A12 and the coast road slow considerably on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
