What Portofino is known for
Portofino is a small fishing village turned yacht harbour, built around a single square, the Piazzetta, that opens onto the water. Life concentrates on the marina, where boats moor a few metres from cafés and boutiques. Above the harbour, Castello Brown and the church of San Giorgio look down over the point, and a footpath continues to the lighthouse at Punta del Capo. The nearest swimming spot is Paraggi, a small cove between Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. Many visitors also walk or take a boat to the abbey of San Fruttuoso. It draws well-heeled summer travellers, day-trippers from the Ligurian coast, and hikers using the Monte di Portofino park. Peak season runs June to September, when the village is busiest.
The drive from Genoa Airport to Portofino
The route leaves the airport, which sits west of central Genoa, and follows the A12 motorway eastward along the Ligurian coast, passing through a series of tunnels typical of this stretch. You leave the motorway at the Rapallo exit, then join the coastal road towards Santa Margherita Ligure. The last section, from Santa Margherita to Portofino, is a narrow two-lane road that hugs the shoreline with tight bends and limited passing room; in summer it can slow to a crawl behind buses and scooters. Total driving time is usually around an hour, longer at weekends and in high season. Vehicles cannot drive into the Piazzetta itself, so the final approach ends at the edge of the village near the car park.
Practical tips for this transfer
Portofino restricts traffic in the village, and parking is scarce and controlled, so a transfer normally sets you down at the entrance near the harbour, from where it is a short flat walk to the Piazzetta. Tell your driver in advance if you are staying at a hotel with its own access, as some allow a brief drop-off closer in. Bring luggage you can wheel or carry over cobbles and slight inclines. If you arrive on a summer afternoon, expect delays on the Santa Margherita road and build in extra time for return trips to catch a flight. For beach days, Paraggi is passed on the way in, and many travellers base themselves in Santa Margherita or Rapallo, which are easier to reach by car.
