Les Arcs and Peisey-Nancroix in the Paradiski area
Les Arcs is a car-free, purpose-built resort split across several levels above Bourg-Saint-Maurice: Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 1950 and Arc 2000, each named for its altitude. Peisey-Nancroix and the Peisey-Vallandry hamlets sit lower, with more traditional chalets and a quieter feel. The two are joined to La Plagne by the Vanoise Express cable car, forming the Paradiski area. Winter visitors are mostly skiers and families booking week-long chalet or apartment stays; Arc 1950 draws those wanting ski-in ski-out convenience, while Peisey-Vallandry suits families after tree-lined runs. In summer, hikers and cyclists come for the Vanoise National Park trails above Nancroix. The funicular from Bourg-Saint-Maurice links the valley to Arc 1600.
The drive from Geneva through the Tarentaise valley
The route runs mostly on motorway: the A40 towards Chamonix, then the A430 and N90 down the Tarentaise valley through Albertville, Moûtiers and Aime, following the Isère river upstream. This stretch is fast and straightforward. The character changes near Bourg-Saint-Maurice, where the climb to the resorts begins. The road up to Arc 1600, 1800, 1950 and 2000 is a series of switchbacks gaining altitude quickly, while Peisey-Nancroix is reached by a separate winding road that branches off before Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Expect roughly three hours in good conditions. The final climb is where passengers prone to motion sickness feel it most, and in winter the upper sections may require snow chains or the vehicle to wait for gritting.
Planning your transfer to the right Arc level
Tell the driver exactly which level or hamlet you are staying in: Arc 1600, 1800, 1950, 2000, Peisey, Nancroix or a Vallandry hamlet are physically separate and reached by different approaches, and an error adds a long detour up the mountain. Since Les Arcs is pedestrianised, confirm the nearest drop-off point and whether a short walk or resort lift to your residence is involved — useful to know before arriving with luggage and ski gear. On Saturdays in winter the valley road is heavily congested with changeover traffic, so allow extra time. If you reach Bourg-Saint-Maurice without a transfer, the funicular serves Arc 1600 only. Have your accommodation's address and a phone number ready for the final approach.
