What Pampaneira is and who comes here
Pampaneira sits at around 1,050 metres on the western wall of the Poqueira Gorge, the lowest of three white villages stacked up the ravine with Bubión and Capileira above it. Its flat-roofed Berber-style houses, the Plaza de la Libertad with the church of Santa Cruz, and workshops selling handwoven jarapa rugs and local chocolate draw day-trippers year-round. Hikers use it as a base for the GR-7 and the long climbs toward Mulhacén and Veleta, mainly late spring to autumn. Winter brings visitors for the crisp air and the nearby O Sel Ling Buddhist retreat above the valley. Water channels run openly down the narrow, stepped streets. It's a walking village: expect steep alleys, few cars, and cold nights even in summer.
The drive from the airport into the Alpujarra
The airport lies west of Granada, so the route first runs east on the A-92 past the city, then joins the A-44 heading south toward Motril. You leave the motorway around Béznar and take the A-348 through Lanjarón, the spa town at the entrance to the Alpujarra, before turning up the A-4132 toward Órgiva. From there the road climbs steadily, tightening into curves as it follows the contour of the Poqueira Gorge past the turnoffs for the valley villages. Reckon on roughly an hour and a half. The last section is genuinely winding mountain road with drop-offs and blind bends, and it slows in poor weather. Passengers prone to car sickness should sit in front for the final climb; the views open across the valley once you pass Órgiva.
Practical tips for this route
Vehicles cannot reach every corner of Pampaneira: the historic centre is a maze of stepped, pedestrian lanes, so drop-off is usually at the small car park by the entrance near the main road, and you walk the rest with luggage. Pack light or in a backpack for the final stretch. There is no fuel station in the village and few after Órgiva, and cash is handy for small shops and bars. Temperatures drop sharply after dark and snow can affect the higher road in winter, so confirm your pickup time allows margin. If you're continuing up to Bubión or Capileira, tell the driver in advance, as the climb adds time. Mobile coverage is patchy in parts of the gorge, so arrange the return pickup point clearly before you set off.
