Güejar Sierra sits on the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada, above the Río Genil, and most visitors come for the mountains rather than the village itself. It's the road-head for the Vereda de la Estrella, one of the best-known walks in the range, starting near the Barranco de San Juan and the old Maitena tram stop, with long views toward Mulhacén and the high peaks. The Embalse de Canales reservoir sits just below the village. Hikers and trail runners dominate spring and autumn, snow-season drivers pass through in winter, and families come in summer for the cooler air and riverside restaurants. The compact old core has steep, narrow lanes and a couple of traditional bars serving local trout and mountain dishes.

The airport lies west of Granada, so the route crosses the whole metropolitan area before climbing toward the mountains. You'll take the A-92 east past the city, then join the A-395 Sierra Nevada road, leaving it at Cenes de la Vega to follow the A-4026 up the Genil valley through Pinos Genil. Expect roughly 50 to 55 minutes in normal traffic. The first two-thirds are fast dual carriageway; the last stretch is a two-lane mountain road that winds steadily uphill alongside the river, with a few tight bends as you approach Güejar Sierra. The village entrance and its narrow streets require slow, careful driving, and larger vehicles cannot always reach the highest lanes.

If you're heading for the Vereda de la Estrella or the Barranco de San Juan, tell the driver in advance: the trailheads are several kilometres past the village on a rough forest road, and not every transfer stops there by default. Confirm exactly where you want to be dropped, as the reservoir, the village centre and the upper trailhead are separate points. In winter, carry warm layers even if Granada is mild — the valley is noticeably colder and roads can be icy in the morning. For a return pickup, arrange it beforehand, since taxis rarely wait in the village and mobile coverage is patchy up the valley. Summer weekends bring heavy day-trip traffic on the A-4026, so allow extra time.
