Tavira sits on both banks of the Gilão river in the eastern Algarve, linked by a low arched bridge near the old market. It draws a quieter crowd than the western Algarve: couples, older travellers and families who want beaches without high-rise resorts. From Quatro Águas a ferry crosses the Ria Formosa lagoon to Ilha de Tavira, a sandbar island of long open beach. The route runs east on the A22 (Via do Infante), the motorway that spans the Algarve inland from the coast. After leaving the airport road you join the A22 and stay on it past Olhão and Fuseta before taking the Tavira exit, then dropping south on the N125 corridor into town. The terrain is flat coastal plain: farmland, orange groves and glimpses of the Ria Formosa lagoon rather than dramatic hills. The whole run is around 35 to 40 minutes with light traffic. The final stretch narrows as you approach the river and old town, where one-way streets and pedestrian zones near Praça da República mean drivers usually set down at the nearest accessible point rather than at the door.

The A22 uses electronic tolls with no toll booths, so a private transfer spares you the hassle rental drivers face registering a card. If you're staying on Ilha de Tavira or heading to Barril or Santa Luzia beaches, be clear on where you want to be dropped: the island is only reachable by ferry from Quatro Águas or Santa Luzia, so a car can only take you to the quay. For hotels inside the old town, give the accommodation name rather than just the street, as several central lanes are pedestrian or one-way and access points vary. Cabanas de Tavira, a short distance east, has its own lagoon-front and is a common alternative base. In July and August, evening arrivals coincide with restaurant crowds along the riverfront, so allow a little extra time for the last few streets.
