Praia da Rocha is the main beach district of Portimão, in the western Algarve. Its wide sand backs onto ochre cliffs and rock stacks, with the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina at the eastern end guarding the mouth of the Arade river. Avenida Tomás Cabreira runs the length of the beach, lined with restaurants, bars and clubs that keep the area busy well into summer nights — this is one of the Algarve's livelier nightlife strips. Families come for the long promenade and calm swimming; day-trippers reach the Praia da Rocha marina for boat trips to the Benagil caves. Nearby you'll find Praia dos Três Castelos and the walkway along the cliffs toward Praia do Vau. Peak crowds run July and August.

The route runs almost entirely on the A22 (Via do Infante), the motorway that crosses the Algarve inland from Faro. It's a fast, easy road with light traffic outside summer, passing behind Loulé, Albufeira and Silves without touching the coast, so the scenery is dry inland hills and orange groves rather than sea views. You leave the A22 at the Portimão exits and drop south through the town, crossing toward the river and marina before the final descent to the seafront. The last stretch through Portimão and down to Avenida Tomás Cabreira is urban, with traffic lights and, in high season, slow going near the beach. Total distance is roughly 68 km and the journey usually takes about 55 minutes.

Praia da Rocha's hotels sit along or just above the clifftop avenue, and several — like the larger resort blocks near the marina end — have driveways that are hard to reach from the one-way seafront streets. Give your driver the exact hotel name and street, not just "Praia da Rocha," so they take the right approach. If you're staying in an apartment on the cliff terraces, note that some are reached by steep pedestrian ramps and steps; ask where the nearest vehicle drop-off is. In July and August the seafront and marina roads clog in the late afternoon, so allow extra time for a return airport trip. The A22 has no toll booths — charges are electronic — which is handled within a private transfer, so you won't need to stop.
