Portimao sits on the Arade estuary in the western Algarve. The old town lines the riverfront, where you can catch dolphin-watching and Benagil cave boat trips from the docks. Nearby beaches include Praia do Vau and Praia dos Três Irmãos, while the fishing village of Ferragudo lies across the river. Families come in summer for the sheltered sands; golfers use the Penina and Alto courses; motorsport fans visit the Algarve circuit at Mexilhoeira Grande. Portimao is also famous for grilled sardines, celebrated each August at its sardine festival by the river.

The route runs almost entirely on the A22 (Via do Infante), the tolled motorway that crosses the Algarve from east to west. Leaving the airport you first pick up the connection past Faro, then head west, bypassing Loulé, Albufeira and Lagoa. It is flat, fast driving across the inland plain, with the hills of the Serra de Monchique visible to the right and glimpses of farmland and cork oaks. Near Portimao you leave the motorway and drop toward the river, crossing the Arade bridge with views of the marina. The whole trip is around 65 kilometres and typically takes close to 55 minutes. The only slow part is the final approach into Praia da Rocha, where beachfront traffic and one-way streets can add a few minutes in peak season.

The A22 uses electronic tolls with no booths, so a private transfer saves you registering a rental car or dealing with the toll system yourself. Tell your driver exactly which part of Portimao you need: the town centre, the marina, or a Praia da Rocha hotel high on the cliff, since they are several minutes apart. Many Praia da Rocha hotels sit on the clifftop with steep access roads and limited drop-off space, so confirm the entrance in advance. If you are staying in Ferragudo or Alvor, mention it, as the driver leaves the motorway at a different exit. For late arrivals, the last stretch through the resort is well lit but the old-town lanes are narrow, so a door-to-door drop is more convenient than a central taxi rank.
