Lagoa is a working town in the central Algarve, less a resort than an administrative hub with a compact old centre, the Convento de São José and a long-standing wine reputation — the co-operative here still bottles Lagoa reds and whites. Most visitors, though, are heading for the coast in the same municipality. Carvoeiro is the main draw, a cliff-backed cove with a small beach and the Algar Seco rock formations along the boardwalk. Nearby are Praia da Marinha, Praia de Benagil with its sea cave, and the fishing village of Ferragudo across the river from Portimão. Porches is known for hand-painted pottery. Families come in July and August, walkers use the Seven Hanging Valleys trail in spring and autumn, and golfers play courses like Gramacho and Vale da Pinta at Pestana.

The route runs west on the A22 (Via do Infante), the motorway that follows the Algarve inland from the coast. From the airport slip road you join the A22 and stay on it for most of the journey, past Albufeira, before leaving at the Lagoa/Portimão exits. It is fast, straightforward driving through low hills and farmland, with the coast out of sight for much of the way. The final stretch depends on where you are staying: Lagoa town is quick from the exit, while Carvoeiro and Ferragudo mean a few kilometres of narrower local roads that get busy and tight near the seafront in summer. Expect around 45 minutes to Lagoa itself, a little more to the coastal villages, and note the A22 is tolled.

Give your driver the specific village, not just "Lagoa": the town, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Sesmarias and Porches are spread out, and getting them mixed up adds real time. Carvoeiro's centre has very limited parking and steep one-way lanes down to the beach — ask to be set down at your accommodation rather than the seafront square, especially in high season when the descent clogs up. Many villas sit on the clifftop developments between Carvoeiro and Benagil, so have the exact address or a pin, as signage is thin. Ferragudo is reached from the Portimão side and its old core is pedestrianised. If you plan a Benagil cave trip, book the boat separately in advance; it can't be reached on foot. A supermarket run in Lagoa town is easier than in the coastal villages.
