Islantilla is a purpose-built resort on the Huelva coast, straddling the boundary between Isla Cristina and Lepe. Its main draw is a long, flat, blue-flag sand beach that runs into neighbouring La Antilla, backed by a wide promenade rather than an old town. Inland sits the Islantilla Golf Resort, a 27-hole course used year-round by golfers who combine play with beach stays. The crowd is overwhelmingly family-oriented and mostly Spanish, peaking hard in July and August when apartment blocks fill and the promenade restaurants stay busy late. Outside summer it is quiet, and golf and walking become the reason to come. Because it's a modern development, expect resort complexes with multiple entrances and communal parking rather than narrow historic streets.

The route is almost entirely motorway. From Faro Airport you join the A-22 (Via do Infante) heading east across the Algarve, passing Olhão, Tavira and Castro Marim. You then cross the Guadiana river bridge into Spain, where the road becomes the A-49 towards Huelva and Seville. From there it's a short run to the Lepe/Islantilla exit, then a few minutes on local roads to the resort. The terrain is flat coastal plain the whole way — no mountains or winding sections — so the journey is smooth and predictable, usually around 55 minutes. The only thing a passenger really notices is the border crossing itself and the change from Portuguese to Spanish signage. The final approach threads through resort streets to reach individual apartment blocks.

Two things catch travellers out. First, Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal, so set your watch forward the moment you cross the Guadiana — flight check-in times on the way back are Portuguese time, but restaurant and check-in hours in Islantilla are Spanish. Second, because Islantilla is a spread-out development with many identical-looking blocks, give your driver the exact urbanización name and block number, not just "Islantilla", and ideally the reception's location. If you're staying near La Antilla the drop-off may be a separate address entirely. Bring euros or a card; the A-22 in Portugal is a tolled motorway with electronic charging. For a summer arrival, aim to confirm your apartment's access details in advance, as many reception desks close in the evening.
