Ferragudo sits at the mouth of the Arade river, facing Portimão across the water. It keeps the shape of an old fishing village: whitewashed cottages climbing the hill up to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a small square (Praça Rainha Dona Leonor) lined with fish restaurants, and the 16th-century Castelo de São João do Arade guarding the river mouth. The beaches are the main draw — Praia Grande, sheltered and shallow, and the smaller Praia dos Caneiros and Praia do Pintadinho along the cliffs to the south. Families and couples come in summer for the calm swimming and the seafood; the pace stays quieter than nearby Praia da Rocha. Streets in the old core are steep, narrow and cobbled.

The journey runs west, almost entirely on the A22 (Via do Infante) motorway, which keeps well inland from the coast. You leave the airport approach road, join the A22 near Faro and stay on it past Loulé, Albufeira and Silves for most of the roughly 65 km. The terrain is gentle and open — farmland, cork oaks and low hills, with the Monchique mountains visible to the north. You exit near Portimão/Lagoa and drop down toward the Arade estuary. The final stretch into Ferragudo is the slow part: the road narrows as it approaches the village and the streets near the waterfront and old town are tight, so drivers often stop at the edge of the centre. Expect around 50 minutes in normal traffic.

If your accommodation is up in the old village, tell the driver in advance and check whether there is any vehicle access — many of the upper lanes are too narrow or stepped for cars, and you may need to walk the last stretch with luggage over cobbles. Book flat, wheeled cases accordingly. If you are staying near Praia Grande or the marina side, access is easier and flatter. In July and August the single approach road and beach parking get congested in late morning and early evening, so an earlier arrival time helps. Ferragudo has small grocery shops but no large supermarket in the centre; the bigger stores are across in Portimão or Lagoa, an easy add-on if you ask the driver to stop en route.
