What you'll find in Strasbourg city centre
The historic core sits on the Grande Île, an island ringed by the Ill river and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its centrepiece is the pink sandstone Cathédrale Notre-Dame, with its astronomical clock and a tower you can climb. West of the cathedral, the Petite France quarter has half-timbered tanners' houses, the Ponts Couverts and the Barrage Vauban terrace. Place Kléber is the main square, packed in December for the Christkindelsmärik Christmas market, one of Europe's oldest. Beyond the island, the European Parliament and Council of Europe draw officials and visitors to the Wacken district. Most of the old town is pedestrian, so tourists, students and business travellers all move around by tram or on foot.
The drive north up the Alsace plain
EuroAirport sits just west of Basel, near Saint-Louis. The route runs almost entirely on the A35 motorway, heading north up the flat Rhine plain past Mulhouse, Colmar and Sélestat. It's an easy, straight run of roughly 130 kilometres, usually around an hour and a half depending on traffic near Colmar and on the approach to Strasbourg. To the west you'll see the Vosges foothills and the vineyards of the Alsace wine route; to the east the land runs flat toward the Rhine and the German border. The final stretch leaves the motorway for Strasbourg's ring road, then slows through city streets. Reaching the Grande Île means narrow, often pedestrianised lanes, so the last few minutes are the slowest part.
Practical tips for this airport-to-city run
EuroAirport has separate Swiss and French exits inside the same terminal; for a French transfer to Strasbourg, follow the France exit so you clear the correct side and meet your driver without crossing customs twice. Confirm your city-centre drop-off point in advance: many hotels around the cathedral and Petite France are on pedestrian streets where cars can only stop at the edge, so you may finish the last block on foot with luggage. If you arrive during the December Christmas market, expect road closures and diversions around Place Kléber and the Grande Île, and allow extra time. For late trains onward, note Strasbourg's main station is west of the island, a short detour from most old-town addresses.
