What St Moritz is like across the seasons
St Moritz sits at around 1,800 m in the Upper Engadin, split between St Moritz Dorf on the hillside and St Moritz Bad down by the lake. In winter it draws skiers to Corviglia and, across the valley, Corvatsch and Diavolezza, plus the Cresta Run toboggan track and events on the frozen lake such as White Turf racing and snow polo. Badrutt's Palace and Kulm Hotel anchor the luxury end. In summer the crowd shifts to hikers, road cyclists and windsurfers, who head to Lake Silvaplana a few minutes down the valley. Nearby Celerina, Pontresina, Samedan and Sils Maria are quieter bases within the same valley.
The drive over the Julier Pass
The route runs almost entirely on motorway for the first two-thirds: the A3/A2 corridor past Zürich, then the A13 down the Rhine valley to Chur. From Chur the character changes completely. You leave the motorway and climb on cantonal road 3 through Tiefencastel and Bivio toward the Julier Pass, which crests above 2,280 m before dropping to Silvaplana and the final stretch along the lakes into St Moritz. Expect a steady motorway run followed by a winding, higher-altitude pass with hairpins and open alpine terrain. In clear weather it is scenic; the whole journey is roughly 300 km and takes around three and a half hours without stops.
Practical points for this route
The Julier is open year-round and kept clear in winter, but after heavy snowfall it can close briefly; the usual alternative is loading the car onto the Vereina rail tunnel between Klosters and Sagliains, which bypasses the high pass. Tell your driver which part of town you need: St Moritz Dorf is uphill with steep, narrow streets and limited stopping, while St Moritz Bad near the lake is easier for drop-offs. On peak ski Saturdays, the Chur approach and the pass road can back up, so an earlier departure helps. A natural break point is around Walensee or Chur before the climb, as there are few services on the pass itself.
