What Laax is known for
Laax sits above the Rhine valley in canton Graubünden and shares one lift network, the Weisse Arena, with Flims and Falera. It is best known among snowboarders and freestyle skiers: the resort runs several of the largest halfpipes in the world and hosts the LAAX Open each January, and the Freestyle Academy near the base offers indoor jumps and foam pits. Most visitors stay at the Rocksresort, a cluster of stone-clad apartment buildings built right at the Laax Murschetg gondola station. Winter crowds are mixed — young freestyle riders, families on the gentle runs above Flims, and skiers heading up to Crap Sogn Gion and the Vorab glacier. In summer the same gondolas serve hikers, mountain bikers and the Caumasee lake near Flims.
The drive from EuroAirport across northern Switzerland
From EuroAirport the route runs almost entirely on motorway for the first three-quarters of the journey. You cross into Switzerland and pick up the A3 toward Zurich, then follow it southeast along the Walensee — a long, cliff-walled lake the road hugs through a series of tunnels and galleries. Past Sargans the A13 turns up the Rhine valley to Reichenau, where the two source rivers of the Rhine meet. The final stretch leaves the motorway and climbs the mountain road up to Flims and then Laax, the part a passenger notices most: switchbacks and a steadier gradient as you gain altitude. Expect roughly three hours in good conditions. In winter the valley is clear motorway driving, but the climb to the resort can be snow-covered and slower.
Practical notes for arriving in Laax
Laax is spread across separate points rather than a single village centre, so tell your driver the exact base you need: Laax Murschetg (the Rocksresort and the gondola) and the older Laax Dorf are a few minutes apart, and Flims Dorf and Flims Waldhaus are further up the same road. Give the apartment building name or hotel, as Rocksresort uses numbered blocks. For an early lift opening on arrival day, a transfer timed to the morning saves waiting for scheduled connections, which involve a train to Chur and a postbus up the mountain. In winter carry boots and a jacket in the cabin rather than deep in luggage — the temperature difference between the valley floor and the resort is sharp, and the final climb can be snowy even when Basel is dry.
