What Davos is and who travels there
Davos sits at around 1,560 metres in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and is split into two linked centres, Davos Platz and Davos Dorf, joined by the long Promenade. Winter brings skiers to the Parsenn, Jakobshorn, Pischa and Rinerhorn areas, plus the Spengler Cup ice-hockey tournament between Christmas and New Year. Each January the World Economic Forum fills the Congress Centre and nearby hotels. In summer, hikers and mountain bikers use the Schatzalp and lake paths around the Davosersee. Culture visitors head to the Kirchner Museum, built around the painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Knowing whether your hotel is in Platz or Dorf matters, because the town is strung out for several kilometres along the valley floor.
The drive through the Prättigau valley
From EuroAirport the route runs on motorway for most of the way: you clear the Basel area, join the A3 heading east past Zürich, then follow the shore of the Walensee before reaching Landquart. That stretch is fast and straightforward. The character changes at Landquart, where you turn south into the Prättigau valley on the road toward Klosters. The last stretch climbs steadily, winding as it crosses the Wolfgang pass above the Davosersee before dropping into Davos Dorf. Expect roughly three hours in normal conditions. Passengers notice the clear shift from open motorway to a narrower mountain road for the final 40-odd kilometres, with tunnels and curves as the valley tightens and gains altitude toward the resort.
Practical advice for this route
Give your driver the exact hotel and whether it is in Davos Platz or Davos Dorf; the Promenade is one-way in places and the two centres are a real distance apart. During WEF week in January, expect security checks, road closures and heavy traffic on the approach, so allow extra time and travel with ID. In winter the road is cleared regularly but carries snow, so a vehicle with winter tyres is essential; the Flüelapass toward the Engadine is closed in the cold months, so it is not an alternative route then. Flights into EuroAirport can land on the French or Swiss side of the terminal, so confirm the meeting point. For early ski mornings or late Spengler Cup finishes, book a fixed pickup rather than relying on onward trains from Landquart.
