What Crans Montana is and who goes there
Crans-Montana sits on a sunny terrace above Sierre in the Valais, made up of the twin villages of Crans and Montana plus smaller hamlets like Aminona and Vermala. In winter it draws skiers to the slopes running up toward the Plaine Morte glacier. In summer the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club takes over — its 18-hole course hosts the European Masters each September and pulls in a well-heeled crowd. Families and hikers come for the lakes, Lac Grenon and Lac de la Moubra, and the walking trails with views across the Rhône valley to the Weisshorn. The resort centre is spread out, with shops, hotels and chalets along Rue du Prado and the roads linking Crans to Montana, so arrivals rarely land at a single obvious point.
The drive from EuroAirport to the Valais
The route runs mostly on motorway. From EuroAirport you join the A3/A2 toward Bern, then follow the A1 and A9 down past Vevey and Montreux along Lake Geneva. The road then tracks the Rhône valley floor through Martigny and on to Sierre, where the motorway section ends. The last stretch is the part passengers notice: a tight, switchbacking climb of roughly 15 kilometres from Sierre up to the resort, gaining around a thousand metres. Expect hairpins and slower going, especially behind buses or in snow. Total time is usually around three hours in clear conditions, more on winter weekends when the valley and the climb both get busy. The scenery shifts from flat lakeshore to vineyard terraces to mountain road.
Practical tips for this transfer
Give your driver the exact chalet or hotel name and the village — Crans and Montana are separate centres and street numbering is not intuitive, so "Crans-Montana" alone can send a car to the wrong side. In winter the climb from Sierre can require snow chains or winter tyres; a private car handles this far better than connecting by train to Sierre and switching to the funicular. If you do prefer rail, the SMC funicular links Sierre to Montana, but luggage and ski gear make the door-to-door car simpler. Crossing from France and Germany into Switzerland, keep your passport or ID ready. For European Masters week in September or peak ski holidays, allow extra buffer for valley traffic and book early, as demand on this corridor spikes.
