What draws people to Colmar
Colmar is the capital of Alsatian wine country, and most visitors come for its old town: the timbered houses of the Krutenau quarter, the canals of Petite Venise, and the covered market on the Lauch river. The Unterlinden Museum holds the Isenheim Altarpiece, the main reason art travellers make the trip. From late November the Christmas markets pack the squares around Place de l'Ancienne Douane, and hotels fill months ahead. In warmer months Colmar works as a base for the Route des Vins: Eguisheim, Kaysersberg and Riquewihr are all within a short drive, so wine tourists, cyclists and walkers use the town as a hub rather than just a stop.
The drive from EuroAirport up the A35
EuroAirport sits on French soil near Saint-Louis, so there is no border to cross for Colmar. The route follows the A35 motorway north through the flat Alsace plain, past Mulhouse, then continues toward Colmar with the Vosges mountains visible to your left and the Black Forest across the Rhine to the right. It is dual carriageway almost the whole way, so the ride is smooth and takes roughly 50 minutes in normal traffic. The final approach leaves the motorway and threads into central Colmar, where the streets around Petite Venise are narrow, pedestrianised in parts, and closed to most traffic during the Christmas market weeks — the last few hundred metres are the slow part of the trip.
Practical notes for the Colmar transfer
If your hotel is inside the old town, tell the driver in advance: many streets around Grand Rue and Rue des Marchands allow only drop-offs, so agree a nearby point such as Place Rapp or Place Scheurer-Kestner and expect a short walk with luggage over cobbles. During the Christmas markets (late November to end of December) central road closures and heavy traffic add time, so allow extra buffer for return airport runs. EuroAirport has separate Swiss and French exits inside the terminal — for a transfer to Colmar you want the French side, which avoids the customs channel. If you plan wine-village day trips from Colmar, arranging the same driver for those legs is easier than finding taxis in small villages like Riquewihr.
