Why people come to Chamonix
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc sits at the foot of France's highest peak, and the town fills with different crowds by season. In winter, skiers head for the separate sectors — Brévent-Flégère, Les Grands Montets at Argentière, and Le Tour at the valley's upper end — none of them linked on skis, which surprises first-timers. Summer brings hikers and climbers, plus day-trippers riding the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842m or the red Montenvers rack railway to the Mer de Glace glacier. The pedestrianised centre around Rue du Docteur Paccard and Place Balmat has the main restaurants and gear shops. Many visitors stay in the quieter hamlets up-valley: Les Praz, Argentière, Les Houches.
The drive through France and past Geneva
From EuroAirport the route runs mostly on motorway. You head south-west on the A36 past Mulhouse and Belfort, then down through the Franche-Comté toward Bourg-en-Bresse, picking up the A40 — the Autoroute Blanche — that tracks the edge of the Geneva basin. The scenery shifts from flat farmland to the first serious mountains as you pass Cluses and enter the Arve valley. The final stretch is a climbing valley road with the Mont Blanc massif directly ahead, ending at the tunnel approach near Les Houches before Chamonix itself. It is a long run, usually a little over three hours. Border formalities are minimal, but you do cross into and out of Swiss road territory on some itineraries, so timing varies with traffic around Geneva.
Planning this specific transfer
Tell the driver your exact hamlet, not just "Chamonix" — Argentière and Les Houches are several kilometres apart and the valley road serves them all, so confirming the address avoids a wrong turn at the end. In winter, Saturday is peak changeover day for ski rentals and the valley road slows badly, so allow extra time for flights that land late afternoon. The town centre has restricted vehicle access and paid parking, so hotel drop-offs sometimes stop at a nearby point with a short walk. If you are skiing different sectors, note that free Chamonix valley buses link the lift stations, which matters when choosing where to stay. Carry a warm layer for arrival; even in summer the valley is markedly cooler than Basel.
