Door-to-door transfer from Dubrovnik Airport to Ston with professional driver, fixed price and flight monitoring included.
What Ston is known for
Ston sits where the Pelješac peninsula joins the mainland, and its defining feature is the chain of stone walls climbing the hill above town, built to protect the medieval salt trade and still walkable today. The salt pans at the edge of Ston are among the oldest still in production, and visitors often buy salt straight from the works. In neighbouring Mali Ston, a short drive across the isthmus, the sheltered bay is where oysters and mussels are farmed and served at waterside konobas. Most travellers come for a food-focused day or overnight stop, tasting shellfish and local Pelješac wines. Summer brings the crowds; spring and autumn are calmer for walking the walls without the midday heat.
The drive up the coast to Ston
The airport is at Čilipi, southeast of Dubrovnik, so the route first passes the city before heading north along the Adriatic corridor. Most of the journey follows the coastal road and the newer bypass sections that skirt Dubrovnik, with open sea views on the left and steep karst hillsides on the right. The road is well surfaced but has bends as it traces the shoreline through villages like Slano. As you approach the Pelješac isthmus the road narrows and drops toward Ston, with the walls visible on the hill before you arrive. Expect roughly an hour and a quarter for the 80-odd kilometres. Since the Pelješac Bridge opened, the drive no longer requires crossing into Bosnian territory at Neum, so no passport checks interrupt the trip.
Practical tips for this route
Ston's core is compact and largely pedestrian, with narrow lanes where a car cannot follow, so agree a clear drop-off point near the main gate or your accommodation and be ready to walk the last stretch with luggage. If you plan to walk the walls, wear proper shoes and carry water, as there is little shade on the climb and the stone steps are uneven. Many of the best oyster spots are actually in Mali Ston, a couple of kilometres away, so factor in that short hop if dining is your reason for coming. Restaurants and the wall ticket office keep shorter hours outside high season, so check before arriving in spring or autumn. If continuing onto the peninsula toward Orebić or the wineries, ask the driver about combining stops.
