Murter sits in northern Dalmatia, linked to the mainland by a small drawbridge at Tisno. The island has four settlements: Murter town and Betina at the northwest end, Jezera to the south, and Tisno at the bridge. Most travellers come to reach the Kornati archipelago, and boat excursions leave from Murter town's harbour and Marina Hramina. Slanica is the busiest beach, a shallow sandy bay near Murter town popular with families; Kosirina near Betina has a campsite and pine shade. Tisno is known internationally for summer music events at The Garden site. Betina keeps a working wooden-boat tradition and a small shipbuilding museum. The season runs firmly from June to September; much of the island quietens outside those months.

This is a long transfer — Murter lies well north of Dubrovnik, past Šibenik. Leaving the airport at Čilipi, the route runs along the coastal road past Dubrovnik, then crosses the Pelješac Bridge, which since 2022 lets you bypass the Neum border strip through Bosnia entirely. You then join the A1 motorway near Ploče and stay on it for most of the journey through inland Dalmatian karst, tunnels and viaducts. Expect roughly three and a half hours in normal conditions. The final stretch leaves the motorway around Šibenik or Pirovac and runs on narrower coastal roads to Tisno, where the drawbridge onto the island can hold traffic during scheduled boat openings. The last few kilometres through the island villages are tight and slow in summer.

Because the journey approaches four hours, request a stop — the Ploče or Šibenik service areas on the A1 are the usual points for a break. Carry passports even though the Pelješac Bridge avoids Bosnia; occasional checks still happen near the coast. If you're staying in Murter town or Betina, give the driver the exact street or apartment name: the old cores have narrow one-way lanes where large vehicles can't reach the door. The Tisno drawbridge opens on a fixed daily schedule in summer for yachts, so an evening arrival can meet a short wait — worth checking your accommodation's advice. For Kornati boat trips, book the excursion in advance from Murter harbour, and note that the last shops and pharmacies are in Murter town rather than the smaller villages.
