What Gradac offers on the southern Makarska Riviera
Gradac is the southernmost town of the Makarska Riviera, sitting below the Rilić range at the point where the coast bends toward the Neretva delta. Its main draw is Gornja Vala, one of the longest pebble beaches on this stretch, backed by a wide pine belt that gives shade right down to the waterline. Families and returning summer visitors dominate July and August; the small harbour and seafront promenade stay quiet in shoulder season. Neighbouring villages Brist, Podaca and Zaostrog, with its Franciscan monastery, are a short drive up the D8. People come mainly to swim and walk rather than for nightlife, so it suits travellers who want a calmer base than Makarska or Split while staying within reach of both.
The drive north along the D8 and through Neum
The route runs almost entirely on the D8 Adriatic coastal road, heading northwest from the airport past Dubrovnik and along cliffs above the sea. The single most important feature is the Neum corridor: the road crosses a short strip of Bosnia and Herzegovina, meaning two border checks on the way out and, when you re-enter Croatia, two more. Since Croatia joined Schengen, these crossings can involve document inspection, so everyone needs a valid passport or ID card ready. After Neum the road passes Klek and the Neretva estuary near Ploče, then follows the shoreline through Drvenik and Zaostrog to Gradac. It is a winding coastal drive rather than motorway, scenic but slower, and border queues in peak summer can add substantially to the roughly three-hour time.
Practical tips for the Gradac transfer
Keep passports accessible, not buried in luggage, because you will show them repeatedly at the Neum crossings; children need their own documents too. If you carry non-EU pets, fresh produce or large quantities of alcohol and tobacco, be aware that crossing into and out of Bosnia has customs implications. Travel time is unpredictable on summer Saturdays, when rental-car and coach traffic clogs the border, so an early or late arrival slot makes the transfer smoother. Gradac itself has narrow lanes near the old harbour; confirm whether your accommodation is in the town centre or up in the newer streets toward Gornja Vala, as the beachfront and the upper village have different access points. Stock up on essentials in Ploče or larger towns if you arrive after local shops close.
