What Drvenik is and who goes there
Drvenik is a small coastal village at the southern end of the Makarska Riviera, below the Biokovo mountain range. Most travellers come here for one clear reason: it's the mainland port for the car ferry to Sućuraj, the eastern tip of Hvar island, so it fills up with island-bound drivers in summer. The village itself splits into two bays, Donja Vala and Gornja Vala, with pebble beaches, a few family-run apartments and konobas rather than big resorts. It stays quiet and residential outside July and August. People who stay overnight tend to be families and couples wanting a calm base near Makarska, plus hikers heading into Biokovo Nature Park inland from the coast.
The drive north through the Neum corridor
The route runs almost entirely along the Adriatic coastal road (D8/Jadranska magistrala) heading northwest from the airport past Dubrovnik. The single most important thing to know is that you cross the Neum corridor, a short stretch of Bosnian territory that splits Croatia in two. That means two border crossings on the way, so keep your passport or ID handy; queues here can add time in peak summer. After Neum the road returns to Croatia near Ploče, passes the Neretva delta, then climbs back onto the coastal shelf below Biokovo before reaching Drvenik. It's a scenic but winding coastal drive rather than motorway, so expect around two and a half hours depending on border traffic.
Planning your arrival and the Hvar ferry
If Drvenik is a stepping stone to Hvar, check the Jadrolinija timetable to Sućuraj before you fly, because sailings are far more frequent in summer than in winter and the crossing takes about half an hour. In July and August the car ferry can sell out, so arriving with buffer time matters. Bring cash or a card for food, as the village has limited shops and no large supermarket; stock up in Ploče or Makarska if you're self-catering. The two bays are a short walk apart but parking near the ferry ramp is tight in high season. Also factor the border crossings into any onward connection: don't book a same-day sailing with a tight margin if you're travelling in peak weeks.
