What Bar is known for
Bar sits on Montenegro's southern Adriatic coast and is the country's main cargo and passenger port, with car ferries running to Bari and Ancona in Italy — useful if your trip continues by sea. Above the modern town lies Stari Bar, a walled hilltop old town of ruins, an aqueduct and Ottoman-era streets, a few kilometres inland. Nearby stands the Stara Maslina, an olive tree said to be over 2,000 years old. King Nikola's Palace museum faces the marina and Pristan waterfront. Travellers use Bar as a quieter base than Budva, with pebble beaches at Sutomore, Utjeha, Dobra Voda and Veliki Pijesak a short drive south. Summer brings ferry passengers and beachgoers; spring and autumn suit walkers exploring Stari Bar and the olive groves.
The drive across the border and Kotor Bay
The route leaves Čilipi and follows the coastal road south to the Montenegro border at Debeli Brijeg/Karasovići, where both passports are checked — this queue is the least predictable part of the journey. Beyond it the road passes Herceg Novi and skirts the Bay of Kotor. Most drivers use the Kamenari–Lepetane car ferry across the Verige narrows to save a long loop around the fjord, then continue through Tivat and Budva. From Budva the Adriatic highway runs on through Petrovac and Sutomore before dropping into Bar. Expect roughly two and a half to three hours in total, longer in peak summer traffic. The scenery is coastal and mountainous, with tunnels and some winding sections; the ferry crossing itself takes only a few minutes.
Practical points for this route
Carry your passport in hand luggage, not the boot — you'll need it at the border, and everyone in the vehicle must present ID. Montenegro is outside the EU and uses the euro but is not in the Schengen area, so this is a genuine international crossing; delays of 30–60 minutes at Debeli Brijeg are common on summer weekends. Check that your driver's vehicle documents cover cross-border travel. Bar's ferry terminal has fixed departure times to Italy, so allow buffer for the border if you have a boat to catch. If your accommodation is in Stari Bar rather than the seafront, note the final approach climbs a narrow lane; confirm the exact address in advance. Mobile roaming charges change at the border — download offline maps before you leave Dubrovnik.
