What Bodrum is like when you arrive
Bodrum town centres on the Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller and now the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, with the twin bays and marina on either side. Cumhuriyet Caddesi (Bar Street) draws a late-night crowd in July and August, while families lean towards calmer Bitez and Gümbet just west. Out on the peninsula, Yalıkavak has the upmarket Palmarina, Gümüşlük sits over the sunken ruins of ancient Myndos with fish restaurants at the water's edge, and Türkbükü suits a quieter, boat-based crowd. Day-trippers use the ferry to Kos. The whitewashed houses, hilltop windmills and the remains of the Mausoleum give the old town its shape. Spring and autumn are best for walking the harbour and old streets before the summer heat and crowds arrive.
The drive from Dalaman through Muğla and Milas
This is one of the longer runs from Dalaman, usually around three to three and a half hours depending on traffic and season. The route heads inland on the D400 towards Muğla, climbing through pine-covered hills with a few winding mountain stretches where the road tightens through the passes. Past Muğla you turn towards Milas on the D330 corridor, crossing more open inland country and farmland before the road drops back towards the coast and the Bodrum peninsula. The final approach into Bodrum town is a descent with views over the bay as you come down towards the castle. It's a mostly single-carriageway highway rather than motorway, so expect a steady rather than fast pace, and slower going behind buses and trucks on the climbs.
Practical advice for this route
Because Bodrum has its own airport (Milas-Bodrum, roughly 35–40 km from town), check which airport your flight actually uses — many travellers assume Bodrum but book to Dalaman by mistake, which adds a long transfer. If your accommodation is out on the peninsula in Yalıkavak, Gümüşlük or Turgutreis, tell the driver in advance: these add 30–45 minutes beyond Bodrum town and the final lanes are narrow. Bodrum's old-town streets around the marina and Bar Street are pedestrianised or one-way, so drivers often stop at the nearest accessible point rather than the door. Carry water for the drive, especially in midsummer, and break up the journey with a stop near Muğla. Book onward transfers early during the July–August peak, when peninsula roads back up in the evenings.
