The city centre, known as Indre By, packs most of Copenhagen's landmarks into a walkable area. Strøget, one of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, runs from Rådhuspladsen to Kongens Nytorv, where the coloured houses of Nyhavn line the old canal. Tivoli Gardens sits beside the Central Station, busiest in summer and during its Christmas market. Christiansborg Palace houses the parliament on Slotsholmen island, and Rosenborg Castle anchors the Kongens Have gardens. This is where most first-time visitors, couples on city breaks and business travellers stay, thanks to the concentration of hotels around Rådhuspladsen, Nørreport and Vesterbro's Meatpacking District, popular for its restaurants and nightlife. Cyclists dominate the streets, so watch the bike lanes when stepping out of any vehicle.

Copenhagen Airport sits at Kastrup on the island of Amager, only a short distance south of the centre. The drive follows the Øresund motorway (E20) north-west before crossing onto Amager's local roads, or takes Amager Strandvej and the Amager boulevards depending on your final address. Most of the route is straightforward urban motorway and wide avenues, so it rarely takes more than about 20 minutes outside rush hour. You'll cross one of the harbour bridges into the historic core, where the roads narrow and cobbled sections around Slotsholmen and Nyhavn slow the final approach. Traffic builds on weekday mornings and late afternoons, and cycle traffic is constant, so the last few hundred metres to a central hotel are usually the slowest part of the trip.

Because the centre is so close, a private car is fastest when you have luggage or arrive late, when the Metro M2 line (which reaches Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport in around 15 minutes) is less convenient. Give your driver the exact hotel name, as many central streets like those around Strøget and Nyhavn are pedestrianised and vehicles must drop off on a nearby side street. If your hotel is in the Latin Quarter or on Slotsholmen, expect a short walk from the drop-off point. Winter arrivals should allow for early darkness and occasional ice on the harbour bridges. For summer, the Distortion festival in June and the Christmas markets in December both add congestion around Rådhuspladsen, so build in extra time if your flight lands during those periods.
