Zermatt is car-free, so no road vehicle reaches the village itself. Täsch, about 5 km down the valley, is where every driver stops. The Matterhorn Terminal Täsch has a large multi-storey car park and a dedicated station where the shuttle train leaves roughly every 20 minutes for the 12-minute ride into Zermatt. Visitors here are overwhelmingly skiers in winter heading for the slopes below the Matterhorn, and hikers and climbers in summer bound for the Gornergrat railway, the Five Lakes walk and the Hörnli hut approach. Families come for the pedestrian Bahnhofstrasse, its shops and the Gornergrat views. Täsch itself is small and functional, built around parking, the terminal and a handful of hotels for those arriving late.

The route runs almost entirely on motorway and fast valley roads before the final mountain climb. From Chambéry you head towards Geneva, cross into Switzerland and follow the shore of Lake Geneva past Montreux, then turn up the Rhône valley on the A9 through Sion and Sierre to Visp. This stretch is broad, flat valley floor flanked by vineyards and high peaks. At Visp the character changes completely: you leave the motorway and climb the Mattertal, a narrow, winding valley road that passes Stalden, St Niklaus and Randa before reaching Täsch. Expect a slower, twisting final 30 km with steep walls on either side. The whole journey is roughly 290 km and around three and a half to four hours depending on border and valley traffic.

Have your onward shuttle plan ready before you arrive: the Täsch–Zermatt train runs until late evening but not all night, so late flights into Chambéry can mean a tight connection or an overnight in Täsch. Pack a small bag for Zermatt and leave bulky luggage considerations in mind — you carry your own bags onto the shuttle train and electric taxis or hotel e-carts handle the final leg in the village. The Mattertal road above Visp occasionally closes or restricts after heavy snow or rockfall near Randa, so allow extra time in winter. Carry a Swiss motorway vignette if continuing by car, and have Swiss francs or a card for the terminal car park and train tickets. Confirm your pickup point at the Matterhorn Terminal, not inside Zermatt itself.
