The linked ski area runs above all four, which is why winter visitors make up most of the traffic from December to April. Tell your driver which village and lift base you need, as they are several kilometres apart along the valley road.

The route leaves Chambéry southbound on the A41/A43 motorway to Grenoble, around 50 minutes of fast, flat driving. From Grenoble it switches to the N85 and then the N91 through Vizille and up the Romanche valley past Bourg-d'Oisans. The real mountain section is the climb to the Col du Lautaret at 2,058 m, a steady series of bends with wide views over the Écrins. Over the pass the road drops into the Guisane valley and runs straight down through Le Monêtier, Villeneuve and Chantemerle to Briançon. Total driving time is usually around three to three and a half hours depending on conditions. Expect roughly an hour of genuine mountain road at the end, so passengers prone to car-sickness should sit in front and keep water handy.

The Col du Lautaret is kept open through winter as the main access to Briançon and the Hautes-Alpes, but snow and temporary closures do happen after heavy falls. Vehicles carry chains or winter tyres for this reason, and a storm can add significant time, so build in a buffer rather than booking the last possible flight. Saturday is the main ski changeover day and traffic through Bourg-d'Oisans and on the pass road can be slow in the middle of the day. Early morning or evening departures move faster. There are petrol stations and cafés at Bourg-d'Oisans and near the Lautaret summit, useful stops on a journey with few services in between. Confirm your exact drop-off village and accommodation address in advance, since the valley settlements are spread out.
