Les Arcs sits on the slopes above Bourg-Saint-Maurice in the Tarentaise valley. The resort is built in tiers, each named by altitude: Arc 1600 is the original, quieter level reached by the funicular from the valley; Arc 1800 is the largest, with the Charvet, Villards and Charmettoger quarters, most of the shops, bars and ski schools. All levels are largely car-free, so vehicles stop at edge car parks. Les Arcs connects to La Plagne through the Vanoise Express cable car at Peisey-Vallandry, forming the Paradiski area. Skiers and snowboarders come December to April; in summer the same lifts serve hikers and mountain bikers. Families favour Arc 1800 and Arc 1950 for ski-in access and childcare.

The journey runs largely on fast roads before the final mountain climb. From the airport near Chambéry you follow the motorway and dual carriageway toward Albertville, then the N90 up the Tarentaise valley past Moûtiers, Aime and Landry to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. This valley stretch is wide and well-maintained, though it can slow on peak Saturdays when every Tarentaise resort changes over. From Bourg-Saint-Maurice the road switches back sharply up the mountainside to Arc 1600 and Arc 1800 — a steady climb of hairpin bends that takes roughly twenty minutes. Expect around two and a half hours in total, longer in heavy snow or weekend traffic. The contrast is clear: motorway-grade driving almost all the way, then a tight, winding final approach.

Tell your driver which level and quarter you are booked into — Arc 1600, Arc 1800 Charvet or Villards, Arc 1950 or Arc 2000 — because each has its own access and drop-off point, and the resorts are pedestrianised. If your accommodation is in the car-free core, you may need to carry luggage the last stretch or use a resort service, so pack with that in mind. For Paradiski itself, note the Vanoise Express linking to La Plagne can close in high wind, so don't rely on it for a fixed first-day plan. In winter carry warm layers for the drop-off even if your flight was mild. Snow chains may be fitted on the Bourg-Saint-Maurice climb. Those on a tight schedule should allow extra time for changeover-day congestion through Moûtiers.
