What Lech am Arlberg is known for
Lech sits at around 1,450 m in Austria's Vorarlberg, part of the Ski Arlberg area linked with Zürs, St. Anton, Stuben and Warth-Schröcken by the Flexenbahn gondola. It draws skiers who want the Weiße Ring circuit and quieter, upmarket slopes rather than St. Anton's nightlife. The Rüfikopf cable car climbs straight from the village centre, while Oberlech above it is car-free and reached by gondola. The Dutch royal family holidayed here for decades, which set the tone: discreet hotels, good restaurants, limited bed numbers. In summer the Green Ring and Omeshorn trails bring hikers, and the Lech river runs through the middle. Families, repeat guests and keen skiers make up most of the winter crowd, mainly December to April.
The drive from Chambéry across Switzerland
This is a long international run of roughly 500 km, mostly motorway. From Chambéry you head north past Annecy toward Geneva, cross into Switzerland and follow the A1 corridor past Lausanne, Bern and Zürich, then on toward the St. Margrethen area and across into Austria near Bregenz and the Rhine valley. A Swiss motorway vignette and an Austrian one apply, which a proper transfer vehicle will already carry. The character changes at the end: after Bludenz you climb the Klostertal, then turn up the Flexenpass road through Stuben and Zürs, a narrow mountain stretch with avalanche galleries and tight bends before the final descent into Lech. Expect five to six hours depending on traffic around Zürich and winter conditions on the pass.
Practical points for this route
Because the journey crosses three countries and climbs to a high pass, timing matters. In heavy snow the Flexenpass between Stuben and Zürs can be held for avalanche control; the alternative is the Arlberg road tunnel toward St. Anton, which adds distance but keeps you moving. Ask your driver to confirm the approach on the day. Lech itself is compact but hotel access varies: Oberlech guests are often dropped at the valley gondola or the hotel's own lift, as the upper hamlet is car-free. Have your exact hotel name ready, since Lech and Zürs addresses are easily confused. Carry passports even within Schengen, as this is a long cross-border drive. For an early flight home, build in generous time for the pass and the Zürich stretch.
