It anchors the French side of the Portes du Soleil circuit, linking to Châtel, Les Gets, Morzine and across to Champéry in Switzerland on one lift pass. Families come for the Village des Enfants ski school and the Aquariaz indoor water park; freestylers head for The Stash and the terrain parks. The snow-sure altitude and early-season reliability make it a winter-first destination, though summer brings mountain biking on the same lift network.

The route runs north-east on the A41 past Annecy, then onto the A40 and A40/N205 corridor through the Arve valley towards Cluses. From Cluses you leave the motorway and climb the D902 into the Giffre and then over to the Morzine valley, a winding two-lane mountain road that tightens as you gain altitude. The final climb from Morzine to Avoriaz is a steep series of hairpins up to the resort plateau. Expect roughly two to two and a half hours depending on weather and traffic through Cluses. In deep winter the upper sections are snow-covered and the last stretch above Morzine can require chains or close during heavy snowfall, so the timing is genuinely weather-dependent rather than fixed.

Because Avoriaz is car-free, the transfer can't drive you to your apartment door. In winter you are typically dropped at the resort entrance parking garages at the top of the hairpins, where resort transport, sleighs or snowcat taxis take you and your luggage onward — book your accommodation's luggage service in advance so someone meets you. An alternative is the Prodains Express cable car below the resort, useful if the top road is closed. Tell your driver which option your accommodation uses. Travel with soft bags if possible, as they load more easily onto sleighs. For Saturday changeover days, allow extra time: the Cluses–Morzine road and resort drop-off points get congested as thousands of guests arrive and leave on the same morning.
