What Alpe du Grand Serre is known for
Alpe du Grand Serre sits above the village of La Morte in the Matheysine, south of Grenoble, at around 1,350 metres on the flank of the Taillefer massif. It is a small, family-run ski area rather than a big-name resort, which is exactly why people choose it: short lift queues, affordable passes, and runs that suit learners and intermediate skiers. In winter families and Grenoble weekenders dominate; in summer walkers come for the Taillefer lakes and the Lac de Poursollet. The resort centre is compact, with chalets, a handful of restaurants and the main lift departures all within walking distance. Nearby La Mure and the Laffrey lakes add day-trip options off the slopes.
The drive from Chambéry through Grenoble and Laffrey
The journey runs south, first on the A43 and A41 motorways towards Grenoble, an easy, fast stretch through the Isère valley. South of Grenoble you leave the motorway and climb the Route Napoléon (N85) up the Laffrey ramp, a steep, well-known graded hill with a safety runaway lane, passing the Laffrey lakes. Near La Mure the road turns east onto smaller departmental roads through Notre-Dame-de-Vaulx and up to La Morte. The final section is a genuine mountain road: tight bends, forest, and a steady climb to the resort. Expect roughly two hours in good conditions. The contrast is sharp — motorway cruising for the first half, then a slow, winding ascent for the last thirty minutes or so.
Practical advice for this transfer
In winter the Laffrey ramp and the final climb to La Morte can ice over or require chains, so travel in a vehicle properly equipped for the Isère mountains and allow extra time after snowfall. Because Alpe du Grand Serre is a smaller resort, there are fewer direct public-transport options than to larger Alpine stations, which makes a door-to-door transfer genuinely useful if you land in the evening. Tell your driver your exact chalet or accommodation name in La Morte, as the village streets are narrow and addresses can be hard to find. If you want to break the trip, La Mure is a sensible stop for supplies, since resort shops are limited. Grenoble is the last point with full services before the climb.
