Why travellers head to Alghero on Sardinia's northwest coast
Alghero sits on the Riviera del Corallo, and its walled old town still speaks a form of Catalan, with bilingual street signs and Gothic churches like the Cattedrale di Santa Maria. The sea bastions (bastioni) are the classic evening walk, ending near the marina and Torre di Sulis. Families use the sandy beaches at Maria Pia, Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto in summer, while day-trippers drive out to Capo Caccia for the Grotte di Nettuno, reached by the Escala del Cabirol steps or by boat. The centro storico is cobbled and pedestrianised, packed with seafood restaurants serving the local lobster (aragosta alla catalana). Spring and early autumn suit walkers around Porto Conte park; July and August bring the busiest crowds.
The drive north across Sardinia via the SS131
This is a long crossing of the island, roughly 225 km and around two and a half to three hours depending on traffic. From Cagliari Elmas the route follows the SS131 Carlo Felice, the main dual-carriageway spine of Sardinia, running inland through the Campidano plain past Oristano. The landscape is flat farmland and low hills for much of the way, not coastal, so don't expect sea views until near the end. After the Sassari area the road switches to the SS291 towards Alghero, narrowing as it approaches Fertilia and the airport zone. The final stretch into the old town involves tighter local streets and the harbour front. It's a smooth, mostly fast road, but it's a genuine cross-island journey rather than a quick hop.
Practical tips for this cross-island transfer
Because the journey is long, plan a rest stop; there are service areas along the SS131 near Oristano, useful with children. Note that Alghero has its own airport (Fertilia) with regional and seasonal flights, so if your schedule is flexible it can be worth checking whether flying into Fertilia avoids the cross-island drive entirely. The old town of Alghero is pedestrianised and ZTL-restricted, so vehicles are dropped at the edge, near the port or Porta Terra; confirm the exact meeting point if your accommodation is inside the walls. For a Capo Caccia and Grotte di Nettuno trip, go early in the day as the cliffside steps get hot and busy by midday. Summer traffic around the beaches and Fertilia junction can add time in July and August.
