What Sozopol is known for
Sozopol sits on a rocky peninsula that was the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia Pontica, and the Old Town is its main draw: cobbled lanes lined with 19th-century National Revival houses in stone and dark timber, small churches, and the Archaeological Museum holding finds from St. Ivan Island offshore. The newer part spreads inland toward Harmani Beach and the small marina. South of town, Kavatsi and Smokinya beaches have sand dunes and campsites popular with younger visitors, while families fill the Central Beach in July and August. The Apollonia arts festival in early September brings concerts and theatre to the peninsula. Day-trippers come for the seafood taverns and the walk around the town walls; the nearby Ravadinovo castle and Ropotamo river reserve draw those staying longer.
The drive south along the E87
The route leaves Burgas Airport, skirts the southern edge of Burgas, and picks up Route 9 (E87) heading south down the coast. It is a straightforward two-lane road for most of the roughly 37 kilometres, passing the fishing village of Chernomorets and the turning for Ravadinovo before reaching Sozopol in about 40 minutes in normal traffic. The terrain is gentle and largely coastal, with the sea appearing on your left in stretches and low farmland inland. The final approach into Sozopol descends toward the harbour, and the Old Town itself is a warren of narrow, partly pedestrianised cobbled streets where large vehicles cannot pass. In July and August the single road into town backs up around midday and early evening, so timing matters more than distance here.
Getting into the Old Town with luggage
If your accommodation is inside the Old Town on the peninsula, tell your driver in advance: cars are restricted on the cobbled lanes and the usual drop-off is near the town gate on Apolonia or Republikanska street, from where you walk in with your bags over uneven stone. Wheeled cases struggle on that surface, so pack accordingly. Guesthouses in the newer part of town near Harmani Beach are far easier for a door-to-door arrival. Book the return transfer with a buffer in summer, as the road out can be slow in the late afternoon. There is no train to Sozopol and public buses from Burgas fill quickly in season, which is why a pre-arranged car is the reliable option. Bring cash for small taverns and the museum; card acceptance is uneven in the Old Town.
